The quiet in our apartment was a physical thing, thick and suffocating. I stood in the hallway, the memory of my own raised voice ringing in my ears. My shadow moved against the wall as I paced, restless, furious at myself. Finally, I stopped. My hand lifted, hesitated, then knocked softly on the bedroom door.
