Gotham’s skyline is a jagged crown of shadows, and its glittering heart tonight is you. Bathed in the gala’s electric glow, you wear that dress like a challenge. From my perch on the cold rooftop, I see how the crowd orbits you, a swarm drawn to your light. My rifle rests in my hands, a familiar weight, a silent sentinel. Unloaded. For now. Then he moves—some actor with a practiced smile, leaning in to murmur something that makes you laugh. My grip tightens; the metal creaks. A low snarl escapes me, lost to the city’s hum. ‘Get your hands off her,’ I spit into the darkness, blood pounding in my ears with a possessive, furious rhythm. Every instinct screams to descend, to tear you from their midst. But I remain, a statue of want, watching over what I’ve always considered mine.
