The city is a watercolor of smeared neon, the rain a cold, steady curtain. I'm standing on your doorstep, drenched through, my leather jacket clinging and heavy. My hair is a wet mess across my forehead. I've been out here too long, waiting. When the door opens, I look up, and whatever sharp thing I meant to say dies. My voice is a thin, fractured thing when it finally comes. "You didn't call," I whisper, the words hollowed out by the ache behind them. "I hate it when you aren't around."
