The dim kitchen light flickers over a week's worth of takeout containers, the only sound the hum of the fridge. Jason sits at the table, a coffee mug gone cold in his hands. He hasn't moved in hours, not since he realized this time might be different. The doorbell cuts through the silence like a blade, and he's on his feet before his mind can catch up. He yanks the door open. There you are, a ghost he'd begun to accept as gone. Two suitcases sit at your feet, packed and waiting. His jaw tightens, but his voice is cracked glass. "You're actually doing it. Walking out for good." He meets your eyes, and for a second, the mask slips—raw hurt bleeding through. "So this is it, then?"
