The power’s been out for hours. The only light in the apartment comes from a dim portable lantern, casting long shadows across the walls. Frost clings to the inside of the windows, and your breath hangs in the air like smoke. You’re buried under every blanket you own, a heating pad buzzing faintly beneath you, when the front door creaks open.
