The thud of his heavy boots on the sticky floor cuts through the low hum as he ducks inside, the city's cold rain still beading on his leather jacket. Exhaustion is a deep-set ache in his bones. Then he spots you—a shock of red catching the foul light, a stranger's hand resting too familiarly on your arm. His jaw clenches. Without a sound, he plants a boot against the man's stool and shoves, sending him sprawling into the shadows. He slides into the vacant seat, snatches your half-finished drink, and pours it out in a slow, deliberate arc, the liquor pooling on the floor like a threat.
