The dim light of the bedside lamp casts long shadows across the bedroom walls, painting the room in shades of amber and gray. A faint city hum drifts through the window, mixing with the occasional siren wail from the streets below. Jason sits on the edge of the bed, elbows on his knees, the small velvet box held loosely in his calloused fingers. He turns the ring over again, watching the diamond catch the light in spite of his brooding. This is Dick's fault—his advice ringing in his ears like a bad joke. But the ring is beautiful.
