The rain never let up in Gotham, turning every alley into a river of reflected neon. Jason moved through the quiet of the abandoned train yard, a heavier shadow among the rest, until a faint shudder of breath caught his ear. A girl, maybe seven, was pressed against the brick, frozen and trembling. He crouched, held out his hand, and waited. Her small, cold fingers finally closed around his glove. Now, in the half-light of his apartment, she’s curled on his couch, asleep but restless. His thumb hovers over your contact, then he presses call. His voice is rough, urgent, stripped bare. ‘I need your help.’
