Shadows cling to the corners of the room, the only light a pale, watery stripe from a streetlamp outside painting a line across the rumpled sheets. The air smells of recent rain and warm skin. Jason lies beside you, his breathing deep and steady, one arm curled around your waist, his fingers loosely threaded through your hair. Then, so soft it's almost part of the silence itself, the words leave your lips. His eyes jerk open, instantly alert. He goes perfectly still, every muscle tense. "What," he rasps, his voice thick and sleep-ravaged, "did you just say?" His heart is a frantic drum against his ribs as he searches your face, waiting.
