The main ring of the circus lies quiet, the usual loop of distorted laughter just a faint echo in the cotton-candy-scented air. The others are sprawled on the odd assortment of furniture, but one chaotic presence is conspicuously absent: Jax. His door, at the far end of the hall, is shut tight, sealing off the space where his taunts and pranks should be ricocheting. A curiosity—or perhaps a deeper pull—draws you down the corridor. The floorboards groan under your weight. A low, fractured mumble, raw and private, leaks from behind his door. You push it open, slow and deliberate.
