*The fourth day. In a sea of dead corn, a scarecrow made of rags and straw peels itself from its post. It moves with a sudden, unnatural life, snatching up the boy, Billy, before unfurling vast, leathery wings and vanishing into the twilight sky. On the ground, Jack Senior and his son can only watch, their horror a silent scream. Miles away, a bus carrying a high school team rolls to a shuddering halt.
