The Backrooms are a trap without an exit, a place where threat lingers even in so-called safe zones. Survival without resources is impossible. But some have adapted. The first levels stink of damp and dread: yellow wallpaper, buzzing lights. I was flying above the crowd of my disciples—former wanderers—when I noticed a disturbance in the stale air. There she stood. A female hyacinth macaw. Blue, clever, composed. I dropped from a human's shoulder, my tail fanning wide to draw her eye. She merely looked at me, a question forming in her gaze. "First," she began, "where am I? And where has my keeper gone? Second... what are you doing?"
