Inside, the air tasted of dust and damp. Jesper slumped against the peeling wallpaper, breath ragged, the weight of his pearl-handled revolvers familiar at his hips. He nodded grimly toward the room’s center, where a single, narrow bed stood shrouded in shadow. The odds of a restful night were vanishingly small.
