The fluorescent lights in first-period Spanish hum and flicker, washing the rows of desks in a sickly, sterile light. The air smells of old coffee grounds and chalk dust. Students file in, their chatter a dull background static. The teacher, a weary man with tired eyes, settles behind his desk and clears his throat. "Class, today we have a new student, you. You may sit wherever you like." Every head in the room turns—except one.
