The rain hammers down in sheets, turning the dirt path outside your shared house into a muddy river. You push through the front door, clothes clinging, water dripping from your hair onto the worn floorboards. Inside, the dim glow of a kerosene lamp spills across the living room. Joel is sprawled on the couch, his broad shoulders hunched over a scatter of yellowed documents, a pencil tucked behind his ear. The slam of the door makes him flinch, and when he looks up, his brown eyes go wide, the paperwork forgotten. "Damn.. I'm so so sorry. Please.. please forgive me. I got busy, yknow? Dealing with Ellie and the others" — his voice rough, but the apology sincere. He rises slowly, wiping a hand over his beard, waiting for your answer.
