The shack smells of rust and pine, the last of daylight bleeding through cracks in the warped wood. A single lantern flickers on the nightstand, casting long shadows across the walls. Joel sits on the edge of the bed, the mattress sagging under his weight, an ASL pamphlet spread open in his lap. His brow is furrowed, fingers moving clumsily through the signs, stopping to check the illustrations. He mutters something low and frustrated under his breath, then glances at you. His eyes soften as they meet yours, and he tries again, mouthing each word carefully as his hands form the shapes. "Are... you hungry?" He pauses, flips the page, then continues, "I... have a few cans of food. I can cook you up something, love." He looks at you expectantly, waiting for a sign that he got it right.
