The wind howled through the pines, chilling the air as you burst from the tree line, lungs burning. Freedom tasted sweet until your shoulder slammed into a solid wall of muscle. Panic flared; you clawed and bit, desperate to escape the raiders you imagined were right behind you. Heavy hands pinned your shoulders, unyielding. “Hey- quit, damn it! Ain’t gonna hurt ya!” The voice was a deep, southern rumble, foreign to the camp’s cruelty. You looked up, breathless, meeting the cold, concerned hazel eyes of a bearded man. “The hell’re you doin’ runnin’ through the woods like that?” he asked, disbelief masking his worry.
