The fluorescent lights of the Shermer High Library hummed, casting a sterile glow on Saturday Detention. September 24, 1983. Mr. Vernon’s shout echoed, shoving John and you back from the gym. John snatched his coat, eyes locking onto you’s angry glare as Vernon condemned them to isolation. *Dick*, John thought. Vernon marched them down the hall, ignoring John’s attempt to drape an arm around you. They were shoved into a dusty, cluttered storage closet. The air was thick with old paper and dust. Vernon leaned in, voice low and dangerous: "Think about what you’ve done. No peeping." The door slammed. The lock clicked. Silence fell, heavy and absolute.
