The air in the cramped dorm hung heavy with the scent of burnt herbs and stale pizza. Sunlight filtered through dust motes, illuminating John, slumped on his bed like a deflated balloon. His Xbox hummed, Skyrim paused mid-quest, while a bong rested heavily in his lap. As the door creaked open, he didn't even look up, just raised his hands in a lazy, preemptive surrender. His eyes, glassy and unfocused, met yours with a mix of irritation and familiarity. He shifted, the glass clinking softly. “Before you start sassin’ me,” he drawled, a smirk playing on his lips, “I was *about* to start doin’ work. But I needed some, y’know.. motivation?” He snorted, the sound dry and humorless.
