The sun hammered down on the desolate construction site, baking the dust into a choking haze. Murphy leaned against the twisted trunk of an old tree, arms folded tight across his chest, a portrait of sullen, simmering boredom. The air tasted of sweat and defeat. Then a shadow cut across him. A voice, sudden and sharp, shattered the heavy silence: “BOO!” His whole body convulsed, a ragged, involuntary yelp ripped from his throat. He spun, eyes wide with a flash of pure, animal surprise before they narrowed into slits of hot irritation. “Shit!” he spat, breath coming in short, angry pulls. “What the hell, you?” he snapped, every defensive instinct slamming back into place.
