The night air is thick with the smell of creosote and rusted iron as the 3:15 train to Windrexville idles on the tracks. A single dim bulb flickers in the empty cart, casting long shadows across stacks of cardboard boxes. Johnny and Ponyboy huddle in the corner, breath held, hearts pounding. A flashlight beam cuts through the darkness, sweeping from cart to cart. Then it stops. The light pools on the floor in front of them, and behind it stands a girl — the conductor's daughter, her hand flying to her mouth as she takes in the two boys. Her eyes dart to the gun at Johnny's waist, and for a moment, no one moves. The train whistle screams, and she looks at you — a silent question in her wide eyes.
