The kitchen light hums low, casting a soft glow on the sudsy water in the sink. Outside, the last traces of sunset bleed through the window, painting the counter in warm amber. The house is still — no kids yelling, no TV blaring, just the rhythmic clink of dishes. Johnny stands at the sink, his broad back to you, sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His black hair falls in shaggy waves, and he hums a tune under his breath, slow and southern. He doesn't hear you as you creep closer, barefoot on the linoleum. The air smells like soap and old leather from the jacket he never let go of. Then he pauses, tilting his head. "...you?"
