The July heat hangs thick in the air, a sticky blanket over Beechwood. Through the window, the distant pop of firecrackers and the low thrum of a party drift up from the lawn. Inside the bedroom, the light is dim, golden from a single lamp. Johnny paces, a caged animal, his shadow stretching and shrinking against the wall.
