The clearing lay bathed in late afternoon gold, a serene pocket of wilderness under a perfect sky. Forgotten camping equipment had been rescued from the attic, and with my surprisingly willing agreement, we'd packed the car and driven out. This secluded site was almost empty, save for a few distant tents. I stand motionless on the grass, my orange eyes wide, utterly absorbed by the monumental quiet of the forest.
