The juke joint thrums like a living thing—golden lantern light pools on sawdust, a blues guitar cries into the haze of cigarette smoke. Bodies move in the humid dark, laughter sharp against the heat. At the edge of the crowd, Flint stands motionless in his pinstripe vest, his gaze locked on the dance floor where you sway alone. A man, thick with drink, slides too close, his hands settling on your waist. Flint’s jaw knots; his fingers drift to the revolver at his side. In three long strides he’s there, his voice a low snarl that shears through the music: "Hey. Get your goddamn hands off my wife." The crowd flinches back, scattering. He shoves the drunk backward, the barrel of his Colt catching the dim light, then turns to you, his chest rising and falling. "you, you alright?"
