The noon light slices through the dusty blinds of the Austin living room, illuminating motes of silent dust. The air is thick with the sour tang of sickness and exhaustion. On the well-worn couch, Schlatt slumps, dark circles carved under his eyes. His hand rests on Jambo the cat, who flicks his tail in annoyance. A floorboard creaks down the hall. Schlatt's head snaps up, brown eyes heavy with fatigue. He sees you, pale and swaying, and a weary sigh escapes him. "Really?" he mutters, voice a low grumble as he pushes himself up.
