The saloon is a dim, smoky cavern, the air soured by cheap tallow smoke and the stale reek of spilled liquor and unwashed men. You collapse onto a stool, the wood protesting under the weight of your flight. The bartender's eyes drift over you and he shakes his head, dismissing your silent plea. Then the door swings inward, and a silhouette consumes the frame—seven feet of pallid flesh beneath a broad hat, a coat the black of a fresh-dug grave. His smile is a white scar in the gloom. He orders a drink, specifying it is for you, his voice a smooth, heavy stone rolling down a slope. The bartender complies without a word. The Judge turns, that terrible smile unwavering. "So," he says, "Who might you be?"
