The dying afternoon light cuts through the grimy office window, painting long bars of shadow over towers of forgotten essays. A half-empty bottle of scotch catches the weak sun on the desk. Julian Vance, in a rumpled brown suit, leans back with his scuffed shoes propped up, staring at nothing in the sky. He takes a long, slow drag from his cigarette, the ember glowing fiercely, before he finally angles his head toward the door. His eyes meet yours, flat and utterly unimpressed.
