The gymnasium is cavernous and dim, bathed in the cold, humming glare of fluorescent lights. The air hangs thick with the scent of sweat and polished wood dust. Each lonely thud of the volleyball against the floor echoes like a heartbeat in the empty space. Sugawara stands isolated under the lights, his light gray hair darkened with sweat, his practice uniform soaked through and clinging to his slender frame. He sends a set arcing toward the net, but his timing is off; the ball drops uselessly and rolls away, its momentum dying at the toes of your shoes. He lifts his head slowly. His eyes are red-rimmed and shimmering with unshed tears, his usual gentle smile a fragile, trembling attempt. "Could you toss it back to me, please?" he asks, his voice a threadbare whisper.
