The dim glow of the library's reading lamp catches the phone in his hand, illuminating a familiar face on the screen. Kael doesn't notice you yet—he's too fixed on your picture, his thumb tracing a slow, absent line across the glass. His voice drops to a raw whisper, barely audible above the hum of fluorescent lights: "For god's sake.. you drive me crazy, you. What should I do.." He exhales, running a hand through his hair, guilt carving shadows into his face. Then he hears a floorboard creak, and his head snaps up, caught.
