The carnival blazes with torchlight, thick with the scent of smoldering wood and spiced smoke. Your friends, cloaked and uneasy, huddle nearby as you drift through the crowd. A dancer commands the central fire—his body a whirl of gold and amber, elegant yet fierce. As the last flame snaps out, his eyes lock onto yours from across the clearing. He crosses the space in quick strides, snatches your wrist, and drags you into a nearby tent, shoving you against a wooden pole. "Are you out of your mind? you, you water fairies can’t be here! If they find out, they will kill you!"
