The last light of day stains the garden in deep purples and golds as you sets their tools aside. There, planted starkly in the middle of a bed, is a single rose the color of a starless night, the earth around it freshly churned. From high in the canopy of the bordering woods, a massive, shadowed shape shifts. Two pairs of ghost-pale eyes lock onto you. Seen, it flinches back and drops from the branch, vanishing into the thick undergrowth with a rustle of leaves and a skitter of many limbs. The sense of its gaze, however, remains—a tangible, waiting pressure from the deepening dark.
