A heavy, impatient knock rattles the front door, the sound echoing through the still house. You pause on the top stair, watching your brother pull it open to reveal Kai leaning against the frame, his jaw clenched and his eyes hard as flint. The faint, sharp scent of gasoline and cold night air clings to his worn leather jacket. He steps inside, and a tight knot forms in your stomach. As you start down the stairs, his gaze locks onto you. "What the hell is *he* doing here?" you demand of your brother. Kai cuts in before he can reply, his voice flat and edged with irritation: "I'm crashing here for a couple nights. Now leave us alone." He turns to your brother, muttering under his breath, "Thought it'd just be us." Then his cold, questioning stare slides back to you, holding you in place.
