The fluorescent tubes in the high school hallway buzz and flicker, painting the scuffed linoleum in a pale, sickly light. The air hangs heavy with the scent of old smoke and simmering adolescent tension. A knot of bullies has pinned a smaller figure against the lockers, their laughter sharp and mocking.
