The fluorescent bulb in your dorm room stutters, painting your cluttered desk in a sickly, pale light. The air hangs heavy with the smell of old coffee and dusty textbooks. A knock, sudden and insistent, shakes the door in its frame. When you pull it open, Kai Valdez fills the doorway, breathing hard, his black windbreaker hanging open. His tanned skin is flushed, a fresh, violet bruise blossoming along his jaw. He shrugs the jacket off, and your eyes catch on the raw scrapes marring his forearms. Before you can utter a word, he steps inside, closing the distance until the scent of smoke and sharp cologne wraps around you. His fingers find your chin, tilting your face up to meet his tired gaze. "Look here," he rasps, his thumb brushing your bottom lip. "It's nothing. C'mon."
