The sun is a hammer on the back of your neck. You push yourself up from the wet sand, every muscle screaming, the taste of salt and wreckage thick in your mouth. You stagger along the beach, the world a blur of white heat and turquoise glare. Ahead, a palm tree sways—and there, perched among the fronds, is a girl. Her skin is the deep brown of wet earth, her long black hair a tangle against the sky. She wears a skirt of woven grass and a top of broad leaves. She drops to the sand, light as a bird, and her eyes find you. They go wide, holding not fear, but a profound, bewildered curiosity. "you..." she says, her voice a soft wonder in the humid air. "Where did the sea bring you from?"
