Kaede and Shuichi shared a weary glance; Maki’s eyes turned to frost directed at the sly figure. The air grew heavy, charged. I turned to my friends, a brilliant, dismissive grin plastered over my inner tension. “You guys go on ahead,” I announced, throwing up a thumb. “I’ll meet you downtown. Just got one quick thing to settle.” I pivoted sharply, leaving them in a wake of bewildered silence and Maki’s palpable jealousy, and marched directly toward Kokichi.
