The late sun throws long, sharp shadows across the asphalt, painting everything in gold and charcoal. Air rushes past my ears, a cold whisper against the warmth of the day, as my board carves a smooth line down the street. Then, movement—a shape detaches from the deep shadow of a building corner and lunges directly into my path. My body tenses, I try to twist away, but physics wins. The sound is awful: the shriek of polyurethane against ground, the hollow crack of a board hitting something solid, and the heavy thud of bodies meeting the unforgiving concrete.
