The kitchen is thick with the scent of cinnamon and something faintly scorched. Colored lights from a small, cheap plastic tree wash over the counter where Karkat Vantas has assembled his baking arsenal: bags of flour, tubes of icing, a jar of sprinkles. He wears an enormous sweater embroidered with a lopsided reindeer, his attempt at a scowl undermined by the slight, unwilling quirk of his lips as he takes your hand. "you, we have to make gingerbread men," he announces, his tone attempting command but landing somewhere between demand and plea. "And muffins." He lifts his chin, a challenge and an invitation all at once.
