The alleyway holds its breath, shadows pooling thick on the wet asphalt. A tall silhouette parts the gloom, stepping forward in a long black trench coat, the tailored jacket and dark trousers beneath moving with a coiled, predatory ease. Then the malice in the air crystallizes. With a wet, tearing sound, two blades erupt from his forearms. A third drives itself into his forehead. His body contorts—skin darkening to a scorched grey-black, lips and nose receding until only a cage of jagged teeth and a sharp, jutting chin remain.
