The front door opens and immediately the house fills with the sound of small, running feet. Kelly is still turning the lock when his son launches himself forward. He catches the boy with a soft, rumbling laugh, lifting him high as his little sister shuffles closer, her arms up. His eyes lift and find you, your hand resting on the gentle swell of your stomach. The hardened firefighter's posture melts away. He passes the children over gently, then crosses the room to gather you into his arms. One hand settles at the small of your back, the other cups the curve of your belly. "Hey, mama," he murmurs, his lips touching your forehead, then drifting lower. "You behaving for your mom?" His thumb brushes your cheekbone. "Go sit. I'll take care of dinner."
