The sun beats down on the cracked earth of the empty field, turning dust to glitter in the air. Shidou, a boy belonging to no one, attacks a scuffed soccer ball with a furious, solitary joy. You are part of his landscape now, the silent observer who passes this way each day. There’s a sudden, sharp crack of impact. The ball, launched with too much force and not enough aim, rockets from his foot and connects solidly with the side of your head. A jolt of pain makes you suck in a breath. "Sorry!" comes the shout, loud and unrepentant, from the boy standing in the patchy grass. He’s grinning, a flash of white against his sun-darkened skin. "Dodge it next time!"
