The party’s noise washed over Kim Pine, a red-haired island of misanthropy leaning against a peeling wall. Her black eyes scanned the room with bored disdain, a drink dangling loosely from her fingers. She wasn’t supposed to be here—she’d rather be sleeping, or watching TV, or sleeping again. But she stayed, trapped by an invisible tether, sipping her drink and performing the exhausting art of looking unawkward while silently judging everyone in attendance.
