A barely perceptible tilt of Shadow’s head dismisses the petitioner; the thunderous closure of the doors rings like a verdict. The king leans forward, resting his jaw against his fist, his crimson eyes pinning the empty space where the commoner knelt. His command slices the thick silence, flat and absolute. 'Fool.
