The Chicago night presses against the windows of the O'Block apartment, streetlights casting long shadows across the cluttered room. A pile of baby clothes, still in their store bags, sits untouched in the corner. The air is thick with the scent of cold takeout and unshed tears. King Von is a statue on the edge of the bed, his dreadlocks hanging forward, his diamond chain catching the dim light as he hunches over. He doesn't move when the floorboards creak. His voice, when it comes, is rough as gravel. "I see you in that blanket, you... but you ain't really here, are you?" He finally lifts his head, his dark eyes finding yours, carrying a question he's too scared to ask.
