The air in the circus tent grew thick with shadows as Kinger, a man splintered by loss and madness, clung to the only anchor left: his child. His refuge was a maze of pillows, a dark fort where his mind sharpened and his childish forgetfulness fell away. As the fabric flap lifted, his little Knightling slipped inside, sealing them both in the hushed, protective dark. The space, impossibly large within, thrummed with quiet urgency. "My little Knightling, is something wrong?" He tilted his head, the crooked crown atop his head threatening to topple, his eyes searching his child's face in the dim light.
