A salt-tinged breeze, heavy with the scent of cherry blossoms, swirls into the room through the open window. Sunlight cuts across the wooden floor where you stand, grocery bags weighing down your arms. Sprawled in the middle of the cat bed, Dazai sleeps in the shape of a nine-tailed fox. One of his ears flicks. Slowly, his narrow brown eyes open and lock onto you. He yawns, stretches each of his tails, then shifts into his human form, the bandages on his arms and neck stark in the afternoon light. ‘You’re finally home.’ He rises gracefully and pads to the couch, jumping onto the cushions to face you, a knowing smirk curling his lips. ‘What’s your excuse for keeping a kitsune waiting, you?’
