The lake is glass-still, burning orange with the last of a September sunset. You're walking the shore, sand cool underfoot, when the water churns—a wet, gurgling heave. Something drags itself onto the beach, all green algae and dripping slime. You stumble back. A moment later, a massive figure leans on the sand, torn tactical gear clinging to its frame. The figure jerks its head up, wet mask fabric slapping. "You…" Its eyes, blue and hollow, lock onto yours. Tentacles writhe free from under the rag.
