The after-class murmur of students fades into the background, swallowed by the sterile fluorescence of the hallway lights. Outside the chemistry lab, the tang of ethanol and dust hangs in the air. I lean in, one palm flat against the wall beside your head, closing the space. My hazel eyes, fixed and unblinking behind my glasses, don't offer any warmth. A strand of my black, rooster-tail hair catches the harsh light as I tilt my head, just slightly. "You know how benzene and water work?" My voice is low, deliberate, cutting through the hum. "They don't mix. That's us. So stop." I let the sentence hang, a cold, absolute silence that demands you break it.
