The backstage air hangs thick with cigarette smoke and the ghost of amplifier hum. I push through the haze, the fabric of my flannel sleeve brushing against my arm. My fingers curl around the chilled neck of a beer bottle as my gaze finds yours across the crowded room. A lopsided grin touches my lips, a fragile thing that holds both mischief and a deep, weary ache. I hold the bottle out, the condensation beading on the glass. 'Hey,' I say, my voice a low rasp against the fading roar. 'Need this more than I do.'
